Holding Your Opinion: Softening & Strengthening

How to sound natural whether you're hedging carefully or arguing with full conviction — the phrases fluent speakers reach for in real conversation.

Two ways to hold an opinion

Native speakers rarely say just "I think." They adjust the strength of an opinion depending on how sure they are, how polite they want to be, or how strongly they feel. There are two directions:

🌤️ Softening

Used to sound diplomatic, cautious, or open to being wrong — good for sensitive topics or when you're not 100% sure.

"Broadly speaking, I agree — but I could be wrong."

🔥 Strengthening

Used to sound confident and convinced — good for opinions you feel strongly about or facts you consider undeniable.

"Without a shadow of a doubt, it's the right call."
